How to Be Productive Without Hitting Burnout

Filed under: Business Practices — Aric Mitchell @ 3:35 am

company needs new hiresStaying productive is a major key to success in most any business where you are either the boss or an employee. By getting more things done in less time, you can stand out from others in your industry and/or company. But as the old saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” In other words, you have to find time to reenergize if you plan to get the most out of your productivity. That means knowing when the right and wrong times are to work. Here are some tips for helping you avoid burnout.

1. Know your peak times of day.

Some of us work better at night. Some work better in the morning. Figure out which time is best for you, and stop fighting it. If you’re a night owl, work at night. If you’re a morning person, work during the day. If you don’t run the show but know when your most productive times are, see if you can’t arrange something with your boss.

2. Focus on one task at a time.

I have a friend who has about five clients that he was trying to keep up with a little each day. (He’s a freelance writer.) Most of the time, he seemed like he was out of breath and maxed out on the things he could remember. His work started to suffer. The problem? He was multitasking too much. Human beings are actually quite terrible at multitasking. It’s far better to tackle one thing at a time. This is often referred to as batch processing. If you have 20 tasks for a client or employer, try to get all 20 of those tasks done on a single day so you can focus on other areas tomorrow and the next day and the next. This isn’t always possible, but wherever you can batch like-work together, do so. It will take a load off your mind.

3. Remind yourself why you fell in love with the job/business in the first place.

If you have a job or business that you love, then go back to the basics and try to remind yourself of why you took to the position in the first place. If you aren’t a fan of your job but feel too locked in financially, then think about the people or the lifestyle you do it for and allow that to be your motivation for recharging those batteries.

What are some tips and tricks that have helped you keep from burning out in your job or business? Sound off in the comments section.
